Hills and Foothills

People are always surprised to see the Cypress Hills, the mountains they expect but the hills are not something you can prepare for. The cache series called A Day in the Hills is the perfect way to spend a day in the Cypress Hills. This series consists of 5 caches placed in the West Block of the Cypress Hills south of Medicine Hat, Alberta. The Cypress Hills is an excellent afternoon hike in the hills, these hills are unique and enjoyable. Forging further west you soon see the mountains on the horizon, long before you get there you enter another popular area for Alberta South cachers, the Alberta foothills. The dark cool forests of the hills and foothills region are a great relief from the sun and heat of the grasslands. The foothills region features some of Alberta's best geocaching adventures in some of the world's most beautiful landscape.

The term foothills makes you imagine some gentler landscape, the foothills of the Canadian Rockies can be anything but gentle. The Alberta Foothills are home to one of the most dramatic life and death sites in the world and one of Alberta South's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Fort Macleod, Alberta. This country has many hazards in every season. Be aware of the weather whenever you are near the mountain regions. Storms can be sudden and intense. Wildlife hazards do exist, especially if you are entering bear country, get additional information from the Park Service.
