Geocaching has deep roots in many other activities. Geocaching is essentially an activity that has been enabled by technology, it never existed before because it could not have existed before, there are very few outdoor activities that fall into this category and none that provide the excitement and fun of geocaching.

Geocaching is similar to hiking and many hikers find geocaching after buying a GPS to aid in the pursuit of good hiking opportunities.
