There are actually only a few caches that
are really designed to show off the Alberta South Grasslands. In the
Palliser Region near Jenner, Alberta you can experience the grasslands
in their full majesty. Driving east or west into the
Atlee School House
cache will give you an awesome look at the grasslands region.
Grouse Cache near
Purple Springs is a nice walk over native prairie grasses.
Just off Highway One you can find the Crawling Valley Caches near
Bassano, Alberta another great series that takes you out on to the prairie.
The Grasslands of Southern Alberta are home to several natural hazards that visitors should be aware of. There is a
Prairie Rattlesnake and though they are not usually encountered they are present on many
prairie grasslands. Another
hazard is the Prickly Pear which is abundant in many grassland areas, the thorns are very sharp and dogs are vulnerable.
In addition to the thorns of the prickly pear dog owners should also watch out for porcupines, another dog hazard.
River Valleys
The Grasslands are found mainly in the eastern area of Alberta South, an area that contains many small
streams and rivers. The tree filled gullies of the river valleys are a popular area for geocaching in Alberta South.
Caches like Riverview
are typical of the first geocaches, little effort
was made to hide them. Lethbridge has a cache called
Out of the Bottoms
that notes it is the first cache
out of the river bottom in Lethbridge. In Medicine Hat many of the caches are very close to the river as well.
